Ways To Use Pillows

Pillows do more than hold your head while you sleep.

Pillows are soft cushions, used all over the house, to make life more comfortable. They are available in a wide variety of shapes, colors, sizes and fillings to suit just about any design or decor. First used in ancient Egypt, pillows were found in the tombs of the pharaohs and made of wood. Today, pillows are made from silk, foam, feathers or polyester and can serve a variety of applications.

Sleeping

The most obvious use for a pillow is to sleep, as up to 1/3 of our lives is spent sleeping. Pillows support our heads and keep our necks in alignment with the rest of the spine. A pillow that is too fluffy, or more than one pillow, will throw the whole spine out of alignment and cause back pain, neck pain and headaches. A pillow should be strong enough to keep your head level with the rest of your body.

Decoration

Pillows are often used as decoration on couches and chairs. While these pillows are still functional, generally they are to bring added color and patterns into a room. To change the covers on the decorative pillows, sew envelope pillow cases that are quickly removed for cleaning or changing. Some also use throw pillows as decoration on the bed.

Sitting Surfaces

Use pillows under the cushions of a couch or chair to create a level sitting surface. Older cushions will often get flat in one spot or along the whole cushion. Place a pillow under the flattened area to lift the cushion back to a comfortable height.

Lumbar Support

If you use the computer or drive for long stretches of time, a lumbar support will ease back pain and fatigue. Place a thin pillow in the small of your back at the computer or in the car to create an affordable lumbar support cushion.

Window Buddy

Use pillows to seal air leaks in window sills and along door jambs. Roll a very thin pillow along the longest edge until it forms a tight roll. Use a needle and thread to stitch along the edge and keep the pillow rolled tightly. These can be used in hot or cold weather to save money on energy costs and help keep the house a comfortable temperature.

Pillow Fight

Across the globe in over 130 cities, for one day a year, pillows have another use. The Urban Playground Movement is a group that encourages people around the world to make better use of public spaces. April 5th of every year is now International Pillow Fight Day. On April 5th, take your pillows to the nearest "fight" location and watch the feathers fly.
