Make Humane Feather Headpieces

Pop singer Ke$ha wears eco-friendly feathers in her hair.

Feather hair extensions and headpieces have been a strong trend recently, prompting a national rush on rooster feathers and other dramatic decorations. This trend has prompted outcry, however, as it was revealed that the methods for harvesting these feathers led to the slaughter of thousands of roosters and other birds. Following the trend in a humane and eco-friendly way is possible; pop-singer Ke$ha, who is widely seen sporting feathered fashions, works with designers who source their feathers ethically and humanely. Creating your own humane feather headpieces makes a fly fashion statement.

Instructions

1. Source your feathers from suppliers who specialize in eco-friendly gathering methods. Some farms sell feathers that have been molted and naturally shed by birds as part of their growing cycle. Other feather suppliers specialize in collecting vintage feathers and selling them in bulk. If you are unsure as to how your feathers are being gathered, ask your supplier directly. Even if the feathers are gathered at a no-kill facility, these birds are subjected to incredible pain as they are being cut and can still die from blood loss and shock.

2. Recycle feathers from other sources to minimize the amount of new feathers that are harvested. Visit thrift shops and antique stores to find vintage feather boas, hat decorations and feather fans that can be refashioned into a new headdress. Feather dusters can be re-purposed as well so long as they are thoroughly cleaned with a gentle detergent before you add them into your designs. Do not buy new feather boas or dusters for your headdresses, as this still adds to the amount of new animals who are harvested for their feathers.

3. Choose feather substitutes that mimic their billowing, wispy aesthetic. Ribbons, silk ferns and synthetic hair can mimic feathers with creativity and artful styling. Fake feathers are also available from many home decor companies; often made from strips of printed silk or rayon on a wire spine, these faux feathers often last longer than their natural counterparts and are a humane way to create a feather headdress.
