Facts on Colorado Wild Birds
More than 400 species of wild birds make their home in Colorado. This number is the offshoot of almost 50 bird families. Bird watching can be enjoyed while hiking or by visiting Colorado's state or national parks.
Bald Eagle
The bald eagle in flight has a wing span of 6 to 7 feet. Once an endangered species, it can now be found near Colorado's bodies of water and prairie dog towns. Fish and rodents are a major part of an eagle's diet. These birds make their home in Colorado all year.
House Finch
The house finch will roost at night, most often close to buildings or in bushes near buildings. The finch will sleep with its head tucked under a wing and appears to puff up like a ball.
Great Horned Owl
The great horned owl is large with a wing span of 55 inches. This bird's notable features are prominent ears, yellow eyes and dark bill. The feathers are a mix of brown, gray and black. They live near mountain forests or in wooded areas where they can easily find food.
Northern Flicker Woodpecker
The northern flicker lives along the edge of Colorado's forests and savannas. This bird is black and brown on its back with a white bottom and black tail. The chest is spotted with pale brown and has a black crescent shape near the top. This variety of woodpecker does the most damage to homes in the state.
Magpie
The black-billed magpie resides in Colorado's savannas, brush and beside streams. It is mostly black with a white belly and sides. The wings and tail are a shimmering blue and green-black.
