Items To Make With Alreadymade Popcorn Balls

Popcorn balls are a unique treat.

Sweet and crunchy---and a little bit sticky---popcorn balls are usually seen during the fall, when they are sometimes given in lieu of Halloween candy to trick-or-treaters. This tasty treat, however, can provide fun year-round, as there are several things to make with already-made popcorn balls that are creative and delicious.

Popcorn Ball Trees

Create unique party snacks or party favors by making popcorn trees. Insert a lollipop stick into a popcorn ball, creating a popcorn lollipop, and insert the end into a small container, such as pastel-colored metal buckets (about 4 inches tall). The sticks will stand up if you place green floral foam inside the bucket, leaving 1 inch open at the top of the bucket. Place "grass" (such as Easter grass or colored raffia) on top of the floral foam to complete your popcorn ball tree.

Tasty Turkeys

Embellish popcorn balls with other snack-foods to turn them into edible craft projects, such as popcorn ball turkeys. Cut seven feather shapes out of red, yellow and orange construction paper and thread a toothpick toward the base of each "feather." Then, stick the exposed toothpick ends into the popcorn ball, creating an array of tail feathers. Using decorator's frosting glue, attach a miniature peanut butter cup for the turkey's head, a butterscotch chip for the beak, cinnamon Tic Tacs for the gobbler, and two pretzels for the feet.

Ornamental Popcorn Balls

Kids will enjoy creating ornaments using popcorn balls, as long as they do not eat up all of the supplies! Use a small wooden dowel to poke a hole about 1 inch deep into a popcorn ball and insert a small candy cane into the hole, creating a hanger for the popcorn ball. Kids can use white frosting to attach mini M&Ms to the popcorn balls for a memorable ornament to either keep or munch on.

Funny Faces

Make funny faces on popcorn balls using gum drops for eyes and candy corn for the nose. Cut pieces of licorice into a smile for the mouth, using decorator's frosting glue or regular frosting to attach candy pieces. Alternatively, you can wrap a plain popcorn ball up with colored cellophane paper and tie it with a twist-tie. Use a permanent marker to draw a face onto the cellophane, such as a ghost or pumpkin, or write someone's name onto the plastic wrap as a party favor.

For the Birds

Feed our feathered friends.

Birds will appreciate this unique bird feeder any time of the year. Begin by untwisting a wire hanger, and then slide a popcorn ball or two onto the wire. Re-close the hanger and use the natural handle as a hook. Hang the wired popcorn balls someplace where you can reach them to work on them further. Smear 3 tablespoons of smooth peanut butter onto each popcorn ball using a rubber spatula. Gently press mixed birdseed onto the peanut butter or attempt to roll the popcorn balls onto seeds laying on a paper plate. Hang the bird feeder up and enjoy the aviary show!
