Pajama Party Crafts

Pajama Party Crafts

If you're more of the stay-at-home type than the party-until-dawn type, a pajama party may be an ideal way to have some fun with your friends. Pajama parties aren't just about watching movies and eating popcorn. There are plenty of pajama-themed activities you and your guests can do right in your pajamas to keep with the theme without putting yourselves to sleep.

Fantastic Fleece

Pajama party attendees who feel the chill as they settle into sleep may appreciate making fleece blankets. Even the most inexperienced seamstress can participate in making blankets, which require solely the ability to cut and make knots--no sewing is involved. Prior to the party, pick up fleece fabrics in colors or fabrics that go with your party theme. You'll find fleece patterns with cartoon characters, holiday prints, sports teams and patterns such as flowers and tie-dye. One option is to get two different fleeces, such as a solid color for one side and a pattern for the other. During the party, have guests cut the borders of their blankets and knot the strips together, forming a double-layer of warmth to snuggle up with when everyone finally hits the sheets.

Make a Mask

Guests who wish to turn in before the party winds down may have trouble falling asleep from the bright light in the room, so offer a party activity to help everyone block out that light. Sleep masks may be made in a variety of styles, with an endless choice of materials and designs. The traditional satin sleep mask involves a small piece of satin and elastic cord, plus optional mask decorations such as stick-on gems, glitter and feathers. Masks may also be made out of cotton, fleece or silk. Guests can bring fabrics from around their homes, such as an old pillowcase or t-shirt. Cut the mask shape out of cardboard to use as a stencil, then punch a small hole on either side of the fabric to thread the elastic through. Make sure partygoers leave a little bit of slack for the elastic; if it is too tight, it could cut off circulation around their face or neck.

Petite Pillows

Whether your guests have brought their own pillows from home or are borrowing yours, adding a pillow-themed craft to your pajama party can fill the time between actual pillow fights. Lead attendees in a project to make mini pillows, or sachets, which may be used to scent drawers or keep a nice aroma in the room. Before the party, pick up some squares of both linen and cotton and a supply of different herbs or crushed flowers such as lavender (a dropper bottle of oil such as vanilla works, too). Start partygoers on an assembly line of sewing the pillows and stuffing them with the herbs and oils. Make sure each pillow is sealed to ensure the stuffing doesn't escape, then add a decorative touch such as a ribbon, sewn-on button or patch.
