Decorate For Any Guy

A leather sofa and neutral colors create a sleek room.

Concepts of decorating for a man have shifted away from limited ideas about masculine colors and style to allow a wide range of personal expression in contemporary interior design. A home decorated for a man may include displays that reflect his interests, such as art, photography, technology and hobbies. In general, decorating for a man emphasizes a tailored, streamlined look. A combination of neutral and bold colors creates a harmonious decorating scheme suited for a man -- without resorting to stereotypes such as creating an industrial "man cave."

Instructions

1. Select a dominant color, a secondary color and an accent color for your decorating project. Neutral colors provide versatility. For example, choose light taupe walls, cream drapes and carpet in a darker shade of taupe. This makes taupe the dominant color and cream the secondary color. To liven up the room, choose a bold accent color, such as cobalt blue, red or emerald green.

2. Choose key pieces of furniture for each room. Emphasize comfort and strong lines. For tall men, select deep chairs and couches to accommodate long legs. Deep seats offer a better fit for large men and throw pillows make them comfortable for shorter guests. A leather couch offers a classic option for a man's living room.

3. Select furniture in one or two finishes for a streamlined effect in a man's home. For example, decorate a home office in oak, with the desk, filing cabinet and a side table and chair in that wood, paintings framed in oak, and a brown or black leather swivel armchair at the desk and accessories, such as a wastebasket, desk blotter and pen holder, in brown or black leather.

4. Arrange a bedroom set in an ebony, cherry or walnut finish or in matte black. Dark furniture works well for a man's room. Alternatively, a bedroom in light-colored distressed wood offers an option to work with light colors, while maintaining a streamlined style for a man. Consider alternatives to standard bedroom pieces. Pairing sleek glass or marble-topped end tables with a sleigh bed creates a strong, inviting man's bedroom design -- without boxy night stands.

5. Select small pieces of furniture, such as cocktail tables, end tables and night stands, to match or coordinate with the main pieces. It isn't necessary for everything to match. For example, use a glass cocktail table to help create the illusion of a larger living room -- the glass gives the impression of more floor space. Use small trunks or leather storage cubes for end tables.

6. Personalize the decor with framed photographs or paintings that reflect the man's interests, such as architecture, nature, animals, abstracts or the work of specific artists or photographers. Select wall art that goes with the color scheme. For example, add a painting with red as one of its main colors to a bedroom decorated in gray, black and red.
