Tell Men Blue Jay From The Female Blue Jay

Blue Jays are members of the crow family.

Blue Jays are large omnivorous birds that reside in North America. One of the most common birds to frequent man-made feeders, Blue Jays are hard to misidentify with their bold markings and striking blue color.

Description

With no distinct way to tell a male from a female, Blue Jays mature to a vibrant blue with white and black markings. Immature jays are more gray than blue in color, with brownish markings rather than black.

Female

Female jays develop a breeding patch on their underbelly that can only be seen if the bird is handled. Breeding patches are a patch of skin stripped of feathers that incubates the eggs while nesting. Females and males grow to roughly the same size and weight.

Male

With the same markings and appearance of the female, a male could only be identified if sexed by an experienced Ornithologist. Males possess the same brilliant blue color, gray-blue crest atop his head and black and white bars on his wings and tail.
