Style Your Personal Cowboy Hat

Decorate your cowboy hat with colorful embellishments and trimmings.

According to Wild Wild Western Wear, John B. Stetson is credited with designing and marketing the first cowboy hat in the US in 1865, a hat that he called the "Boss of the Plains." More than a century later and the hat -- which is now a legendary symbol of cowboy lore - is popular all around the world. Inject some personality into your own cowboy hat by customizing it with a range of trimmings and embellishments for a stylish take on this timeless fashion accessory.

Instructions

1. Consider how you want your cowboy hat to look. Do you want your cowboy hat to have a theme? Or do you simply wish to personalize your hat to your own tastes? Sketch your ideas on paper.

2. Begin by styling the brim of your hat. Measure the brim with a tape measure, and then cut some ribbon, lace or cord to the correct length. Pin the material in place around the upper brim of the hat and carefully glue it in place with a glue gun.

3. Create and customize a hatband for your cowboy hat. Measure the circumference of the hat's crown. Next, cut a length of ribbon, lace or the trimming of your choice to that length, plus an added inch or so to overlap. Pin the material in place around the hat's crown and glue it down with your glue gun. Before you permanently attach the hatband, consider sliding in a feather or two under it for an added stylish touch.

4. Apply further embellishments to the main area of your cowboy hat with your glue gun. Rhinestones, sequins, buttons and silk flowers are all great ideas. You can even use real flowers -- simply stiffen the flower's petals by coating them in a mix of glue and water.

5. Style your cowboy hat even further with some sparkly glitter. Write your name or draw doodles such as hearts and stars on the hat using a glitter pen.
