Bookmarks are an inexpensive craft that can be customized to your particular theme.
Many parties and summer camps call for western-themed crafts. Crafting does not need to be an expensive endeavor. Western crafts can be made of almost anything from rags to beads to paper. Learning more about different types of western crafts can give you some ideas as you search your home for appropriate items and supplies.
Yarn or Rag Dolls
Help your child recreate a common toy from the Wild West. Mothers would create dolls from any cloth or fabric that they had on hand. Yarn and rag dolls are easy to make, and children can create this craft on their own. Use a large rag to create the form of a rag doll. Arms, legs and the head are made separate from the body with scraps of cloth. Yarn dolls are made in a similar manner. Cut several strands of yarn to the same size. Fold the strands in half and then portion off the arms, legs, head and body with smaller pieces of yarn.
Bookmarks
Western-themed bookmarks are a cheap craft that can customized as desired. Cut out bookmark-size pieces of brown card-stock paper. This will be the base for the bookmark. Decorate the bookmark with western themed stickers or paper cutouts. An easy paper cutout to make is a cactus. Cut a cactus shape out of green paper and then glue the cactus cutout to the bookmark base. You can also glue or tape feathers or dried flowers to the western-themed bookmark.
Dream Catchers
A dream catcher is a classic western-themed craft. Dream catchers are inexpensive, only requiring a few supplies. Tie one end of a 70-inch piece of string to a five-inch hoop or ring. Loop this string evenly five times around the perimeter of the ring and pull tight. Loop the string to itself, working inward to the middle of the dream catcher. At the middle of the dream catcher, tie the string so that it will not become loose. Cut seven-inch pieces of the string and tie them to the bottom of the dream catcher so that they dangle below. Slide beads or tie feathers to these strings.
Pins
There are many different designs that can be used to craft a western-themed pin. Safety pins are easy and inexpensive to purchase. You can also buy pins at your local craft store that have a flat top so that you can glue larger decorations to the top of them. Once you have the right kind of pin for your specific project, it's time to get some decorations. Beads, charms, and foam or felt cutouts all work well. Decorate the pins in the western style and then use them to dress up a shirt or backpack.
