You can make an old-fashioned quill pen using a real feather.
One of the earliest writing implements in Western cultures is the writing quill. For more than 1,000 years, people wrote documents and letters using a writing quill, which was created out of a large bird feather. If you are interested in discovering what it must have been like to use a writing quill as your only writing instrument, you can create your own quill out of simple craft materials. Once finished, you can use your writing quill to write a letter to a friend.
Instructions
1. Fill a dish pan with warm water, and add in 2 tbsp. of dish soap. Submerge a large ostrich feather into the soapy water. Gently wash the feather in the soapy water, then rinse the feather with clean water. Lay the feather out flat onto a towel to dry for three hours. Once dry, fluff out the plume of the ostrich feather to make it full again.
2. Cut off a 1/2-inch section from the bottom of the feather shaft using a penknife. Cut the section off an a 45 degree angle. Discard the cut-off section.
3. Cut small half-circles into both sides of the tip of the shaft, leaving a sharp tip between the cut-out sections. As you cut, angle the pen knife to make the cuts curved. This will allow the tip to maintain its sharpness as you press on the quill to write.
4. Cut 1/4 inch straight into the pointed tip. This slit will soak up a small amount of ink so that you can write longer without having to dip the quill into ink over and over again.
5. Dip the quill into an ink pot, then use the quill to write a letter to a friend or family member.
