Steampunk is a fashion style that celebrates the 19th century while adding anachronistic touches, sometimes in a flamboyant way, sometimes very subtly. During the 19th century, well-dressed ladies and gentlemen would never be seen without their hats, so if you want to complete your steampunk ensemble, make sure that you have a hat worthy of the rest of your outfit. Start with a plain hat, like a top hat, a derby or a pillbox hat. You may find options in vintage stores, or you can purchase plain hats from fabric and craft stores and dress them up.
Instructions
1. Measure around the crown of a hat, close to the base and add 1 inch to this measurement.
2. Cut a ribbon that is as long as the measurement you found in Step 1.
3. Apply a fine line of hot glue around the base of the hat's crown.
4. Press the ribbon firmly against the hot glue, starting it at a spot that is to the side of the hat, rather than at the front or the back.
5. Glue down the loose bit of ribbon to the ribbon that is immediately underneath it.
6. Glue the feathers to the spot where the ribbon overlaps. You can use long pheasant feathers or ostrich feathers for a dramatic effect, or you can use a small cluster of trimmed peacock feathers for a more subtle look.
7. Disguise the place where the feathers are glue to the hat by gluing a flat charm of some sort directly over the feather's quills. This may need a large dollop of hot glue. A flower charm is excellent for a dainty touch, but if you have more mechanical bent, consider gluing a cluster of brass gears to the location.
8. Allow all the glue to dry thoroughly. At this point, you have a hat that is ready to wear.
