Sew A Promenade Dress For Any Dog

A dog prom dress can be embellished with feathers and lace or sequin trims.

You can make an elaborate and elegant prom dress for your dog with this simple pattern. The glamorous look of the prom dress is created by the materials you choose to use. Shimmering satins are the best option for fabrics and the straps for the dress are made of decorative ribbons. You can add laces and trims, even silk flowers to personalize the dress and make it truly unique. The amount of fabric and decorative ribbon will depend on the size of your dog. The amounts listed below are enough for a dog up to 30 pounds.

Instructions

Make the Pattern

1. Measure around the chest of your dog just under the front legs. Add two inches to this number. Draw a horizontal line this length on your pattern paper. This is the top of the dress.

2. Measure from the point on the back of your dog that is even with the front armpits to the tail to find the length of the prom dress back. Draw a perpendicular line this length beginning at the center of the dress's top line.

3. Measure the chest/belly of your dog from the point on her chest that is even with the armpits to the point on her belly where you want the dress to end. This determines the length of the dress front. Make sure you leave space for her to do her business while wearing the dress without getting it wet. Depending on the size of your dog, this space will probably be 2 to 4 inches. Draw a perpendicular line from each end of the dress top line that is the length you want for the dress front. Now your drawing should look like a capitol "T" with two lines coming down from the top of the "T."

4. Add two more inches to the dress top length and draw a horizontal line at the bottom of the "T." This will be the bottom of the prom dress. This bottom line should be parallel with the dress top line and the center length line should hit exactly in the middle of this dress hemline.

5. Connect the two ends of the front belly lines with the two ends of the dress hemline.

6. Cut out the pattern piece. Lay the pattern on top of the underside of the fabric. Pin in place. Trace around the pattern with a pen. Make sure the pen does not bleed through the fabric. Cut out the fabric a half-inch outside your tracing line. The tracing line will serve as a guide for your sewing.

Make the Dress

7. Hem the two sides and the bottom of the dress by turning under the edges a quarter-inch two times. Pin in place. Machine stitch close to the folded edges. Press with a hot iron.

8. Sew the hook-and-loop tape to each short side of the belly of the dress so that one side overlaps the other and can be closed using the tape.

9. Turn the top of the dress down toward the inside one quarter-inch and press with a hot iron to hold the fold.

10. Try the dress on your dog and measure the length for the dress straps from the top of the back, over the shoulders to the top of the dress front. Mark the place on the dress where the straps should be attached with a marker.

11. Cut the decorative ribbon one inch longer than the length you determined in step 4. The decorative ribbon will be the dress straps.

12. Place the ends of the decorative ribbon on your marking points on the back of the dress, right sides together. The underside of your ribbons should hang down the back of the dress. Machine stitch the ribbons in place a quarter-inch from the edges.

13. Turn the straps up and place the other ends on the dress front, again right sides together. Machine stitch the ribbons in place a quarter-inch from the edges.

14. Turn the straps up and fold under the top line of the dress. Pin in place and machine stitch all around the top of the dress. This will help secure the straps as well as create a hem-like finished edge for the top.

15. Add trims, laces, rick-rack, and bows or flowers as desired by hand-sewing them in place over the dress. Trim all loose threads.
