Tell if an Araucana Chicken Is a Rooster?
Araucana chickens are native to South America, and are sometimes known as Easter egg chickens because of the different colored eggs they lay. These eggs can be different shades of blue, and are always beautiful and exotic. Because so many people buy them for this egg-laying ability, it's very important to be able to differentiate an Araucana hen from a rooster. Luckily, it's a fairly simple task.
Instructions
1. Look at the length of the feathers. A hen will have shorter, almost cropped-looking feathers, while a rooster's feathers are much longer and showier. A hen will look almost naked next to a rooster. Rooster feathers also tend to have more color than hen feathers.
2. Watch the temperament. Roosters are naturally more aggressive than hens. This is not to say there aren't aggressive hens or submissive roosters but, on the whole, if there's a barnyard bully, chances are it's a rooster. Roosters also are much more territorial toward people.
3. If your chicken is crowing, it's a rooster. Hens almost never have that loud, throaty crow that can wake you up at the crack of dawn. So, if you can't get your chicken to be quiet, you know you have a male on your hands.
4. Check to see if it's laying eggs. If all else fails, you can be absolutely sure that a chicken that is laying eggs definitely isn't a rooster, and one that's not laying eggs almost certainly is.
