Making Trims
for a Miniature Doll
Miniature Trim for Miniature Dolls
To create authentic period costumes for miniature dolls, ornate trims of lace and ribbon and exquisitely detailed accessories such as hats, umbrellas and jewelry are required. These dolls are collector's items, often the inspiration for a lifelong hobby. Miniature dolls are usually under 7 inches tall, but can be even smaller when scaled to fit in miniature dollhouses. Small as they are, these collectibles wear only the fanciest fashions, made with the tiniest stitches, trims and braiding.
The Finest Apparel Needs the Finest Trims
Julienne's Miniature Doll Gallery in Maine offers an amazing array of beautiful hand-painted dolls dressed in silk, chiffon, velvet and tulle. A workshop full of antique lace and vintage ribbon, rick rack trim, beads, feathers, half pearls and other tiny jewelry trims these costumes.
Tiny Flower Trim from Victorian ribbonwork
Doll costumers have revived the lost art of Victorian ribbonwork. Fine vintage ribbons, used as trim and millinery, are transformed into flowers. Practically any type of flower can be fashioned out of Victorian ribbon. Artists make tiny roses, violets and pansies complete with leaves and buds, then decorate costumes, hats and shoes with these micro-masterpieces.
Fashionably Dressed, Luxuriously Trimmed
During the 1800's in the Passage Choisseul of Paris, seamstresses, milliners, shoemakers and jewelers created wardrobes and accessories specifically for dolls owned by upper class little girls. Magazines supplied patterns girls could use themselves to perfect their own sewing skills and create elaborate, detailed outfits for their dolls. These original dolls were no more elaborate and elegant than the ornate miniature dolls artisans make, dress and trim today.
