Plan a birthday tea party -- with or without tea.
If you are planning a tea party birthday party or just a tea party for little girls or toddler girls, there are a few things you can do to keep everything fun, memorable and off the carpet.
Instructions
1. Make or purchase your invitations. The great thing about tea parties is that anything goes. While you may want your invitations to have a teapot or frilly motif, you can also use invitations with flowers, birds or garden pictures. Include information such as when and where, and RSVP. If you like, schedule your tea party around teatime -- between 2 and 4 p.m. but it's OK to schedule it at any time. Be sure to ask guests to wear their frilliest clothes for the event.
Find or borrow a tea set with enough cups for all the guests. Avoid toy tea sets, since the cups often aren't large enough for dunking. Mismatched cups are OK, too -- just be sure that everything is pretty pottery or china to make guests feel important. If you're worried about cups breaking, go to thrift stores or garage sales to find tea cups with handles. You can always use mismatched saucers if you have to, too. The girls won't notice or care.
2. Choose your refreshments. You can make weak tea and serve it with mostly milk, or you can avoid the tea altogether and use plain milk or hot chocolate instead. Be sure to have a pitcher with cream, and sugar cubes -- if the girls go overboard, have them stop at two lumps.
Prepare several plates and platters ahead of time. Include various cookies (mini ones are always fun at a tea party), and donut holes or cupcakes. Pink or purple petit fours are also a nice treat -- purchase one per guest and have them sitting next to each guest's place before they arrive. Tall cake stands, multi-tiered platters and cupcake stands all add an impressive look to your tea party spread. Don't forget a fabric tablecloth to make guests feel extra special.
If you like, use cupcakes instead of one larger birthday cake to celebrate a birthday. Another option is to buy a giant cupcake pan to make one large cake that looks like a big cupcake.
3. Plan your games and activities. Before serving refreshments, be sure to have some activities for guests to take part in. Purchase inexpensive hats from craft stores or novelty toy stores, and supplies to decorate them. Buy floral wire and tie bows ahead of time for guests to add to their hats. Buy bags of large feathers, maribou trim and outrageous silk or plastic flowers. Have scissors ready to help guests design their hats; having a couple of older siblings or adults around to help with the hats is beneficial, too.
Buy some dollar store or garage sale jewelry to play dress-up. Buy some inexpensive makeup and have a few makeup mirrors around. If you like, have older girls or siblings give the little girls "makeovers" instead.
Purchase sugar cookies or make teapot-shaped sugar cookies, and buy several colors of icing and sprinkles. Have the girls decorate cookies to eat and take home.
Play tea party toss, in which girls take a bean bag and attempt to toss it into a large tea kettle. The girl with the most bags in wins.
Make a doll buggy obstacle course. Put dolls in two strollers, and set up a basic obstacle course. The one who gets to the end first wins. Try driving the buggy blindfolded, driving the buggy while hopping on one foot, or driving the buggy while twirling.
4. Keep things simple. Tea party birthdays can be a fun way to celebrate a little girl's or a toddler girl's birthday. The girls will have fun even if you decide to keep things simple -- it's the tea party they'll enjoy, so you don't have to spend too much time, effort or money on other games.
