Create A Mattress Very Nicely

A neat bed often feels more comfortable as well.

Learning proper bed-making techniques benefits anyone, young and old, male or female. A neatly made bed not only looks good, but it feels better when you crawl between the sheets at night. A neat bed creates peace of mind as well, since it brings an air of calmness and sense of order to the room. A bed that's neatly made is also less likely to lose its bedding during the night as you sleep, meaning more rest and less time fighting with the covers.

Instructions

1. Remove all bedding, pillows and anything else on the bed. Grab clean sheets that fit your bed size. If the bottom sheet is a fitted sheet -- the type with elastic at the corners -- fit one corner over the mattress, then stretch the sheet and attach the diagonal corner to the appropriate corner of the bed. Stretch the remaining two corners into place and smooth out any wrinkles. If you are using a flat bottom sheet with no elastic, follow Steps 2 through 4 for the bottom sheet as well.

2. Unfold the top sheet on the bed. Ensure that the thicker hem is at the head of the bed. Smooth the sheet out toward the four corners, leaving an equal amount of sheet hanging off each side of the bed and enough sheet to tuck in at the foot.

3. Stand at the foot of the bed and tuck the bottom of the sheet neatly between the mattress and box spring, keeping the rest of the sheet smooth and taut. Walk to the head of the bed and pull the top of the sheet straight and taut from each side.

4. Return to near the foot of the bed on either side. Press one finger on the corner of the mattress while grabbing the sheet about 1.5 feet from the foot of the bed. Pull the sheet upward where the sheet drapes down off the side of the bed. Tuck in the area between the pulled up sheet and the foot of the bed. Hold the corner in place, creating a 45-degree angle with the draped sheet as if you were wrapping a gift. Tuck in the sheet to create a crisp, neat angle. This angle is called a hospital corner. Tuck the sheet all the way up the side of the bed.

5. Repeat Step 4 with the other side of the bed.

6. Place a blanket atop the sheets, smoothing it out as you go. Leave about 6 inches of sheet showing at the head of the bed, allowing ample blanket length to tuck it in at the foot. Create hospital corners at the foot of the bed, as you did in Step 4.

7. Place pillows at the head of the bed and fluff them. Lay a comforter on the bed if desired. Smooth the comforter out by pulling out any wrinkles. Make sure the comforter hangs evenly on both sides of the bed. Using your forearm, chop at the pillows to push the comforter slightly underneath. Alternatively, you may remove the pillows, fold the comforter down 12 to 18 inches, then fold the blanket and sheet down together over those. Replace the pillows.
