A Claddagh ring is a sign of love, loyalty and friendship.
A Claddagh ring (pronounced kla-dah) is the traditional wedding ring of Ireland since the 17th century. Traditionally, the ring is an heirloom passed down from mother to daughter. The ring has a design of a heart clasped in hands, with a crown on top.
History of the Claddagh ring
The legend is that a native of Galway fishing town Claddagh, called Richard Joyce, was sold into slavery. He was eventually sold to a Moorish goldsmith who taught Joyce his art. When King William III negotiated the return of all slaves, Joyce returned to Ireland with the first Claddagh ring, even though the goldsmith offered him half his money and his daughter's hand in marriage. He then gave the ring to his true love in Ireland, who awaited his return.
What the Design Means
The heart on the ring symbolizes eternal love between two people; the hands represent loyalty; and the crown means loyalty and fidelity. While it used to only function as a wedding ring, it is now a common symbol of friendship.
How it is Worn
You can wear the Claddagh ring in four different ways, which symbolize different things depending on the hand it is on and the way the ring is facing.
If worn on the left hand with the top of the heart facing up/out (towards the fingernail), it symbolizes the wearer's engagement; however, if the ring is on the same finger but the ring is facing down or in towards the knuckle, the wearer is traditionally married.
If worn on the right hand with the heart facing up, this means the wearer is considering love, while if worn downwards the person does not want to start a relationship.
