The life of a BUR or built-up roof can be extended if you refurbish them roughly every five years. These flat roofs are often referred to as "tar & gravel" roofs. They're built out of multiple layers of asphalt and asphalt-saturated mats of felt, fiberglass or polyester and covered with crushed pea gravel. Without refurbishment, they normally last 15 to 25 years depending on construction and weather conditions.
