Seal Leaves Onto Plates

Use a unique assortment of leaves to decorate dishes.

Adding real dried leaves to plates is a way to display the beauty of nature in your serving dishes or for home decor. Create an assortment of designs on the plates using different leaves in random patterns. Alternatively, create a set of matching plates to use as decorative accents in your home, using a variety of leaves or different sized leaves from the same tree. Make a unique arrangement to hang on the wall or in a plate rack. Collect leaves from different seasons and create a year-round display.

Instructions

1. Separate the dried leaves by variety, size or color.

2. Arrange the design you want to create on the plates. There are many options for designs. One leaf type in a variety of sizes, one leaf type at various colors throughout the seasons, various leaf types and sizes or a single leaf type and color for each plate are a few possibilities. Use leaves from flowers as well as trees for more variety. Once you have a design, sketch it out on paper or create another set of leaves with the same design to use as a guide to placement.

3. Brush a layer of decoupage medium glue over the back surface of the clear glass plate. Use a foam craft brush to apply a thin coating to the glass.

4. Apply the leaves carefully, avoiding shifting as much as possible to prevent damage to the leaves. Grasp the leaves with a pair of tweezers to place them.

5. Cut a piece of rice paper slightly larger than the plate.

6. Place the rice paper on top of the leaves and hold it in place while brushing a coat of decoupage medium over the paper. Rice paper is a very thin, clear paper that becomes transparent when glued. Keep an ample amount of decoupage medium on the brush to prevent it drying out while brushing, and gently brush each area only a few times to prevent tearing the paper. Let the decoupage medium dry completely for at least two hours.

7. Cut off any excess paper from around the edge of the plate. If the edges are not secure, apply additional decoupage medium to glue them in place to prevent them from curling.

8. Apply at least 10 coats of polyurethane sealer or non-toxic acrylic clear coat sealer to the bottom of the plate, in order to use the plate as a serving piece.
