Train Kids Handle Frustration

Teach your child to cope with frustration in a postive manner.

Children get angry and frustrated just like adults. Often children are taught that being angry at an adult is disrespectful and inappropriate. Children should be taught that emotions are natural and being angry and frustrated is normal. Instead of punishing children for being upset, teach them handle their feelings in a productive manner. Keep specific materials in a basket for frequent use if you have an easy-to-anger child. These strategies should be used to help calm the child before talking about the problem.

Instructions

1. Give the child modeling clay to squeeze and knead. Modeling clay is a firm substance that requires force to manipulate. Modeling clay helps the child exert some of his negative energy until he is ready to talk about it.

2. Offer the child paper to tear. Tearing paper is a repetitive task that requires fine motor skills and concentration. This gives the child a chance to calm her frustration and reclaim control.

3. Give him a stress ball or stress toy to squeeze and manipulate. There are toys available in funny faces and shapes that may help take his mind off the issue.

4. Put a feather on an empty table and have the child blow it across the table. The act of blowing releases pent up emotions and requires her to concentrate and expend energy. Make it a game and see how far or how many times she can get the feather across the table.
