Lower To Some Coat

Add Down to a Coat

In areas with cold, harsh winters, a good winter coat is a must. One of the warmest types of coats available is a down coat. Down coats are similar in construction to a down comforter or sleeping bag. They are quilted, which creates pockets of down on the inside of the coat. The warmth of down coats is rated by something called fill power, which refers to the down's ability to stay fluffed up inside the coat. The higher the fill power, the warmer the coat. As down coats age though, the down may become crushed and therefore less effective at keeping out the cold. An inexpensive alternative to replacing your coat is to add more down to your coat.

Instructions

1. Before beginning, carefully inspect the coat for any rips or holes. Once any holes have been repaired, turn the coat inside out. Determine which sections of the coat will need to be filled with new down.

2. Using the scissors or seam ripper, carefully cut a straight line about 4- to 6-inches long into the lining of the coat. At this point, any old down can be removed from the coat, if necessary. Otherwise, loosely fill the section with new down. Make sure not to overfill the section and to allow plenty of room for the down to move within the section of coat.

3. Close the cut with the straight pins. Using a back stitch, carefully hand sew the opening closed. To ensure that no down escapes through the stitches, it may be best to sew over the opening twice.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each section of the coat. Once all sections have been filled with down, turn the coat right side out and shake it out well. Hang the coat on a hanger and allow the new down to fluff up overnight.
