Create A Nest From Clay

Create a replica of a bird nest with clay.

Whether you are teaching a class about birds, or you are looking for a project to entertain your bird-enthused child, use clay to create a replica of a nest. Creating clay nests is a project for all ages and an engaging way to teach youngsters about the lifestyle of birds. In addition to expressing creativity and learning about birds, this craft also hones fine motor skills. Simply gather some twigs, leaves and feathers and set out craft clay and you are ready to create clay nests.

Instructions

1. Instruct children to form a wad of brown clay, about the size of their palm, into a ball. Have them place the ball on a flat surface and press into the center of it with their thumb.

2. Show children use their fingers to form the hollowed center of the ball into a bowl-like shape. This will serve as the shell for the nest.

3. Break the twigs and leaves into small pieces. Set out the twigs, leaves and feathers. Instruct children to press the items into the center and around the rim and outer edges of the clay. The materials will give the nest an authentic look.

4. Have children roll blue, white or yellow clay into small balls or oval shapes. Place three or four balls of the same color into the center of the nest to represent bird eggs.

5. Allow the clay to dry for a period of 24 to 36 hours.
